The aim of holding a Kata Championships is to give judoka a reason to learn katas, not just kata as required for grading but to experiment and work together on the lessons that kata can teach.

With so many different katas that judoka may wish to show at a  it is difficult to produce a system which allows the merits of diverse katas to be scored equally.

In order to allow lower and higher grades to participate with equal possibility of ‘competing on a level playing field’ (or tatami) if they have put in the effort the following system has been used.
