In May 2009 Maldon Mayor David Denyer awarded the Town Mayor Award for Services to the Community to Sensei John. Cllr Denyer said “We decided he had shown consistent dedication to the judo club, which is an outstanding community group for the town”

On being presented with the award John said “I am pleased to have been nominated and delighted to have been presented with the award, which really is a testament to the parents and many volunteers who have helped me keep the club running.”
